Stories

More work stories... enjoy :)

Sometimes it's so hard not to laugh....
(This is actually one of my favorite stories.)
1.
Me: "Tell me why you think you haven't been able to lose any weight since you got the lap band 2 years ago."
Lady: "My eating habits are fine really. It's this company, the lap band is a scam."
Me: "Alright, well how about we try this. Tell me what your typical breakfast is like."
Lady: "2 scoops of ice-cream usually."
Me: " So, do you think ice-cream is a good choice for breakfast if you are trying to lose weight?"
Lady: " Listen lady, I don't smoke, I don't drink, I'm not married so I don't get sex, plus I'm not a whore, so what else do I have??"

How do you not laugh at this! However, I should have just said, "You know what, you're right, enjoy your morning ice-cream."

Sometimes it's hard not to gag...
2.
Patient: "I love salad! I eat it daily!"
Me: "That's wonderful!"
Patient: "My favorite is mixing the lettuce with mayonnaise."

Sometimes it's hard not to strangle...
3.
"2 slices of bacon is nearly 50 calories a day and is not a problem in my diet."

4.
" My weight is not caused by me. It's my body chemistry. My body doesn't want me to lose any weight."

What does this even mean?! So your body likes having diabetes and your heart loves clogged blood vessels?

Sometimes it's hard not to refer your patients to another dietitian...
5.
24 hr recall:
B: skipped - drank 2 gatorades
L: bag of doritos with fried chicken
D: refried beans with chips

Her reasoning behind her food choices that day:
" I didn't eat much the day before so I knew I had to eat. I had a friend once who died from not eating. I don't want that to happen to me."

Where do you even start with this patient!!

Hope you enjoyed the stories. I am running a support group meeting for post-op lap band patients tomorrow so I should accumulate a few more... :)

I think one slice of turkey bacon is 35 calories...not bad.

And I'm very sorry you have to deal with these patients. And I just read an interesting article about obese people and their body image. Surprisingly, many of them think they need to gain more to be at their "ideal" weight.

Lettuce & Mayonnaise?? That is disgusting. And I think if I were in that ladies shoes (#1) I might be eating ice cream for breakfast, too! :>)

At least they tell you the truth! When I ask for a 24-hr diet recall, some of them tell me things that I KNOW are lies, otherwise they wouldn't be needing bariatric surgrey.
